What to Expect at the Houston Dump

For residents of smaller towns, a trip to the city dump often involves little more than a short drive and a small fee. For Houston residents, however, a trip to the dump can be more complicated.

Houston doesn’t have an official “city dump.” Instead, the city contracts with multiple sites that handle various types of waste. This means that before you load up a truck and head for your nearest dump, you’ll need to know which type of landfill you need.

Type I Landfills

The City of Houston website lists six Type I landfills available to the public. A Type I landfill is the standard solution for municipal solid waste (MSW). You can typically drop off non-hazardous waste from households and businesses during public dropoff hours.

Type IV Landfills

You can find nine Type IV landfills in and around Houston. Type IV landfills can only accept brush, construction waste, demolition waste, and rubbish. These landfills are not designed for standard home garbage disposal.

No matter which type of landfill you choose, be aware that no landfills in Texas can accept car batteries, liquid waste, medical waste, motor oil, or tires. All of these items have separate procedures for their proper disposal.

What to Expect

Since these sites are owned and operated by a few different companies, your results will definitely vary based on the landfill you visit. If you choose to visit one of these sites, you may want to read some online reviews first. Some of the more common complaints include unhelpful staff and uneven pricing.

Many reviewers, whether they were happy with the service they received or not, pointed out that the smell is far worse than you might imagine.
