Gainsborough Waste dumpsters filled with accepted waste at our Dump Site transfer station in Houston, Texas

What You Can and Can’t Bring to a Houston Trash Dump Site

If you’re loading up a truck or trailer and heading to a Houston trash dump site – whether you’re a contractor between jobs or a homeowner finally tackling a big cleanout – you don’t have time for guesswork.

Picking the wrong mix of materials could get you held up at the scale, pay more than you expected, or be told you have items that cannot be accepted.

Maybe your load is a blend of demo debris, yard waste, old furniture, and a few questionable items from the job site or the garage. One or two wrong items can turn a quick run into a second trip, extra fuel, and a lot more hassle than you planned.

Our goal at Gainsborough Waste is to make it easy to drop off bulky waste at our Dump Site. We operate two TCEQ‑permitted Type V transfer station facilities in Houston that accept certain types of municipal solid waste (MSW) from construction and demolition waste streams, as well as selected household and yard waste.

Learn more about what we accept versus what we do not accept (e.g. hazardous waste, special waste, or otherwise prohibited waste). That way, you can load once, dump once, and get back to your day.

What We Accept at Our Houston Trash Dump Sites

Our sites are designed for dry, non‑putrescible waste. In plain language: no food waste, no liquids, and no materials that rot or leak. We accept a wide range of common construction debris and bulky items, including:

  • Construction debris (drywall, tile, shingles, etc.)
  • Concrete and asphalt
  • Roofing materials and shingles
  • Bricks and masonry
  • Untreated lumber
  • Treated lumber
  • Untreated sheetrock
  • Cardboard and paper
  • Clean wood
  • Clean brush debris
  • Inert fill materials (brick, stones, soil, concrete, gravel, sand, dirt)
  • Plastics (PVC, HDPE, LLDPE)
  • Metals and scrap metal
  • Glass
  • Household trash and junk (non‑food, non‑liquid)
  • Yard waste such as branches, grass clippings, soil
  • Furniture and many appliances (once properly drained of regulated substances)

If you’re a contractor, this covers most of your standard construction and demolition loads. If you’re a homeowner in Houston, TX, cleaning out your home or tackling a DIY remodel, these are the typical items you can bring to our waste facilities.

What You CANNOT Bring: Prohibited and Unauthorized Waste

Some materials are unsafe, regulated, or simply not allowed at our dump site. The following items require specialized handling and must go to approved hazardous or special waste facilities:

  • Hazardous waste
  • Pesticide containers
  • Material containing asbestos
  • Incinerator ash
  • Contaminated soil
  • PCB waste
  • Radioactive waste
  • Unknown chemicals
  • Used or old tires
  • Lead‑acid batteries
  • Used oil or used oil filters
  • Liquid wastes of any kind
  • Septic tank pumping
  • Grease or grit trap wastes
  • Special waste from health‑care facilities
  • Waste from wastewater treatment plants or air pollution control facilities
  • Tanks, drums, or containers used for storing hazardous materials
  • Paint cans with liquid paint inside
  • Fluorescent light bulbs and ballasts
  • Slaughterhouse waste
  • Dead animals
  • White goods containing CFCs (e.g., refrigerators or freezers not properly evacuated)
  • Class 1 and Class 2 non‑hazardous industrial waste

We also do not accept household garbage and food waste, such as bagged kitchen trash or food scraps. Those items belong in your regular curbside household garbage service or in the City of Houston’s solid waste system, not at a dry transfer station.

If you are ever unsure whether a material is allowed, call us before you load it at 713‑785‑8050. A quick call to our local customer support team can save you a wasted trip.

Tips to Avoid Problems at the Dump Site

We understand you have other things to worry about besides determining whether waste is accepted or unaccepted. But a little preparation can help make your visit faster and safer:

  • Separate obvious prohibited items (paint, chemicals, liquids, batteries, tires) before you load.
  • Keep loads as dry as possible to avoid mixing with liquids.
  • Don’t bag food waste with construction debris; keep food waste in your normal trash stream.
  • Bundle or stack materials such as lumber and brush to make unloading easier.
  • Secure your load so nothing blows out on the way to the site.

When in doubt, ask. Our team is here to help you match the right material with the right disposal option.
